HAGEN WAS SURPRISED to find Owens in the underground parking ramp when he and Pierce returned to the Met. While Pierce went on ahead, Hagen hung back, taking note of the obvious discomfort the young constable appeared to be in.
âAlright there, Paul?â Hagen asked, a concerned frown on his face.
Owens smiled. âFine, sir. Took a tumble off my bike. Just a bit sore.â
Hagen nodded. âI can tell. Be sure to take it easy until you heal.â He glanced at the patrol cars nearby and noted for the first time that Owens was back in uniform. âWhere are you going?â
âShepperton,â Owens replied. âMiss Gardener is semi-conducting some sort of ballistics field analysis... or something. She asked me to come out.â
âSemi-conducting?â Hagen said with some amusement.
Owens shrugged. âI canât think of a better way to explain it, sir. You know how she is.â
Hagen chuckled. âIt seems appropriate to me. Carry on.â He watched as Owens carefully got into the car and drove out of the parking ramp.
As he rode the lift up to Murder Squad, Hagen reflected on what the constable had said. His prompt explanation for the visible pain and discomfort he was experiencing was a bit pat, and quite honestly Hagen didnât believe him at all. As brilliant as Owens was at detecting lies in others, he was rather lousy at producing them himself. Hagen debated whether or not to bring Pierce into it as he left the lift and walked down the hall to the glass-doored squad-room he oversaw.
Pierce met him at the door with a grim smile and a phone number written on a sticky note.
âApparently weâre not the only ones looking into Wilhelmâs murder.â Pierce handed him the paper. âReporter named Corin Fielding, from the Surrey Voice.â
Hagen frowned as he looked at the name, reading it several times to himself before saying aloud, âShould I know this paper?â
Pierce smirked. âNot likely, unless you smoke hash and enjoy Phish concerts. Itâs an alternative-style paper... Very socially-conscious, lots of environmental articles and radical politics.â
âAnd he wants me to phone him back, I take it?â Pierce nodded in reply, and Hagen sighed. âRight, no point putting it off. Iâll do it now. Rick, while Iâm at this, run this reporterâs name and any previous connections to either of the deceased, as well as Dryden & Associates, Shepperton Power ââ
âAnd Lusk.â
Hagen shrugged. âEh, why not? Throw him in as well.â He left Pierce to it and entered his office, shutting the door and taking the time to brew a cup of tea and get comfortable before calling the reporter.
âFielding.â
âYes, this is Detective Superintendent Douglas Hagenââ
âYes! Superintendent! Thank you for phoning back so quickly. Let me just get my notes...â
The next twenty minutes proved to be some of the most enlightening Hagen had experienced talking to a reporter and he vowed to himself to go looking for this alternative newspaper as soon as he could.
According to Fielding, Kristina Wilhelm had contacted him, anonymously at first, with information regarding the improper disposal of waste chemicals used at the plant.
